winning the Information Race for Euro Changeover
The latest public awareness
survey from the Euro Changeover Board of Ireland (ECBI) shows that the Board's information campaign is working.
The national survey was
carried out last November following the Board's October/November TV,
press and radio advertising campaign. The
main findings of the survey were that in November:
- 77% of those
surveyed knew that euro notes and coins will be introduced in
2002. (65% in July 2000).
- 83% of those who knew
the year also knew the month (64% in July 2000).
- 60% knew that a euro
comprised 100 cent.
- 38% knew that a pound
will get you one euro and 27 cent (11% in July 2000).
Mr. Charlie
McCreevy TD, Minister for Finance, welcomed the survey findings and
urged everyone to think euro and to start noticing euro values.
"We
can all help the information effort by building up a scale of values
for ourselves in euro. The way to do this is to pay attention to
euro values wherever we see them - for example on lotto tickets,
bank statements, tax-free allowance certs, payslips and till
receipts in supermarkets", the Minister said.
Philip
Hamell, Chairperson of the Euro Changeover Board of Ireland, said
the Board was pleased that the information campaign was proving
successful in raising euro awareness among the public.
"It is
important to remember that these figures relate to last November. We
ran another advertising campaign after Christmas and there was a lot
of publicity in early January on the "one-year-to-go"
theme. We are now running another campaign involving soccer star
Paul McGrath, Kian Egan from Westlife and TV personality Sarah
Kavanagh. Our aim is to make everyone aware that the euro is coming
on 1 January 2002 and that an Irish pound will get you one euro and
27 cent.
We will
continue our advertising and public information activities through
this year", Mr. Hamell said. "And these activities will be
complemented by many other initiatives, including the provision of
training packs for organisations and associations and the euro
guidelines for teachers which have already been distributed to every
teacher in Ireland", he said.
Details of the changeover are available on the
Board's website www.euro.ie and the
low call number 1890 20 10 50.
