Mr. Philip Hamell, Chairperson of the Euro Changeover Board of Ireland,
confirmed today (2 January 2002) that, by last night, the majority of ATM
machines in the country are now dispensing euro notes.
"The banks have confirmed that, by 6.00pm yesterday evening, over 85% of
ATM machines throughout the country are back in normal operation and dispensing
euro, mainly €10 and €20 notes. This is above the EU average of 80%. They
have also reminded customers that existing ATM cards, Laser and credit cards
will continue to operate as normal and Personal Identification Numbers remain
unchanged," he said.
From today, all social welfare payments made in cash by An Post will be made
in euro. During this week, payments over €20 will generally include at least
four €5 notes. Civil Service and other payrolls and pensions will also be paid
in euro.
Dublin Corporation confirms that parking meters are operating smoothly and
accept both Irish and euro coin. Public bodies such as the Motor Taxation
Offices are operating in euro and giving change only in euro.
Public transport operators have confirmed that the service has been operating
normally. Passengers have been encouraged to purchase pre-paid tickets or, if
paying in cash, to tender the exact fare in either Irish or euro but not to
tender mixed currencies.
National Toll Roads have also confirmed that their toll-booths are operating
smoothly. Taxis are now charging in euro.
Retail outlets are charging in euro and are giving change only in euro.
Utilities e.g. electricity, gas and telephone companies are now billing in euro.
Initial reports indicate that the public is responding well to the request to
pay in one currency only.
"We ask that people use one currency only when paying for an item,
rather than offering a mix of euro and Irish pounds. Be patient and allow a
little extra time when purchasing goods and services as we all get used to the
new currency. Also remember to use the euro coins from your starter packs,"
Mr. Hamell said.
