McCreevy Launches Euro Converter For Every Household
An Post to deliver 1.4 million euro
converters
1.4
million households are set to receive a special euro converter from
the Euro Changeover Board of Ireland (ECBI) over the next month. The
converter, which is being delivered by An Post, is aimed at
empowering households to convert for themselves, according to Mr.
Charlie McCreevy, TD Minister for Finance.
"The converter is very user-friendly.
It has large, clear buttons and a large screen. I would urge poeple
to get accustomed to using it in preparation for the
changeover," said Mr. McCreevy.
The hand-held electronic converters will
convert Irish pounds to euro and euro to Irish pounds in a simple,
easy-to-use manner. The aim is for a converter to be delivered to
every household in the country over the coming weeks. An Post will
be making the delivery, which is expected to be completed by 10th
December.
Mr. Philip Hamell, Chairperson of the Euro
Changeover Board of Ireland, said that the distribution of the euro
converter was part of the ECBI's public information campaign.
"Our campaign includes intensive advertising, a LoCall number
and a website www.euro.ie During
October, we sent a 24-page Handbook on the changeover to every
household," he said.
With effect from 1st January 2002:
Accounts in financial institutions will be
converted to euro free of
charge; Withdrawals from accounts will be in euro; ATMs will begin
dispensing euro notes; Wages, salaries, pensions and social welfare
payments will be in euro
Information on the euro changeover is
available on the Board's website www.euro.ie
