NGO PROGRAMME

The ECBI operates a funding programme for Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) as part of its National Information Programme. Under this programme, funding of up to 50% is available to NGOs to meet the costs of activities undertaken to promote awareness of the euro. For the purpose of this programme, NGOs are defined as non-profit making organisations and include registered charities, voluntary, community and vocational organisations.

The 2000 NGO Programme is now underway. Contracts were awarded to 46 organisations and projects are due to be completed by 30 June 2000 at the latest. A new programme, for year 2001, will be announced in the autumn.

For Further Information & Links on this programme, please contact the ECBI Secretariat.

The single European currency, the euro, came into being on 1 January 1999

The conversion rate for the euro against the Irish pound was irrevocably fixed on that date. The rate is
1 euro = £0.787564

(see our 'conversion rates' page for the irrevocably fixed rates for the euro against the currencies of the other participating member states).

The euro can now be used for cashless transactions. Euro notes and coins will be introduced in 2002. The three years before the introduction of euro notes and coins will allow everyone time to get used to the new currency.

The third phase of the ECBI's Public Information Programme was launched by Mr Charlie Mc Creevy TD, Minister for Finance on 12 January 1999. This phase includes a comprehensive TV and radio campaign and press and billboard advertising. Also a leaflet will be distributed to every household. In February, we will make available a large supply of paper euro converters - a credit card sized gadget which will give a number of values for the Irish pound against the euro and vice versa.

Many organisations are introducing dual display - ie showing bill totals in euro as well as in Irish pounds - to help customers adjust to the euro. (see press release on 'Third Phase of ECBI's Public Information Programme' below for further details).
